Secretary of State Wes Allen Applauds Alabama Legislature’s Final Passage of HB 67

Wes Allen, Alabama’s Secretary of State, praises the Alabama Legislature for passing HB 67, sponsored by Representative Jamie Kiel (R-Russellville). The legislation is designed to improve access to voter data while protecting voters’ personal information and reducing nuisance calls.

Under current law, phone numbers of individual voters are available for purchase as a part of the state’s voter list. HB 67 will eliminate automatic inclusion of phone numbers from the publicly available voter list, eliminating a key avenue used by professional spammers to obtain Alabamians’ contact information.

In addition, HB 67 caps the cost of obtaining the statewide voter list, making it more accessible to candidates, campaigns, and organizations that rely on voter data for legitimate purposes.

“Any step we can take to limit access to our personal phone numbers is a win for Alabama voters,” Allen explained. “HB 67 will help reduce unwanted telemarketing and spam calls across our state while ensuring voter data remains accessible and affordable for valid, lawful use.”

Secretary Allen thanks Representative Kiel for sponsoring this legislation and Senator Matt Woods (R-Jasper) for carrying HB 67 in the Senate.

“I want to thank Representative Kiel for his hard work on this legislation and Senator Woods for pushing this bill through the Senate,” Allen said. “I am proud to see the Alabama Legislature’s dedication to protecting the privacy interests of Alabama voters, while also maintaining transparency and appropriate access to voter data, and look forward to this legislation being signed into Alabama law.”

Wes Allen is Alabama’s 54th Secretary of State. The Secretary of State is Alabama’s Chief Elections Official. Additionally, Alabama law gives the Secretary of State more than 1,000 different duties.
