Secretary Merrill Encourages Voters to Exercise Caution When Following Links from Third Parties

Wednesday, September 9, 2020 – MONTGOMERY – As the November 3 General Election draws closer, the number of texting campaigns encouraging voters to participate in the upcoming election has substantially increased.

“Links from third parties often misdirect or mislead voters. During a time when many voters may already be confused about the changes being made to the elections process, it is important to remind Alabama voters that is the trusted source for election information,” stated Secretary of State John H. Merrill.

Eligible Alabamians can register to vote or download their absentee ballot application online at Due to the declared states of emergency, anyone who is concerned about COVID-19 is able to apply for and cast an absentee ballot.

“In order to ensure that your vote is cast and your voice is heard, Alabamians should go straight to the source: Third party sites have failed Americans across the country with unsuccessful voter registration attempts and false information,” continued Merrill. “Misinformation comes in all forms, and I encourage voters to exercise extreme caution when following links from third parties.”
