Secretary Merrill Commends Former Representative April Weaver on White House Appointment

Wednesday, May 20, 2020 – MONTGOMERY – The statement below from Secretary of State John H. Merrill is in response to the recent White House appointment of April Weaver:

Last Tuesday, my friend and former colleague April Weaver (R-Brierfield) resigned from her seat in the Alabama House of Representatives to accept a position with President Donald J. Trump.

April will be joining the Trump Administration as the U.S. Health and Human Services Regional Director for Region IV, consisting of Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, South Carolina, and North Carolina.

April is poised, experienced, and most competent to serve President Trump and our country in this capacity. Her services in the legislature as an effective member of the House and leader as the Chair of the House Health Committee, where she was the first woman to serve in that leadership role in state history, have positioned April for great success.

She has assisted our office, as well as countless other state agencies, to ensure that state government is able to truly assist the people we represent. Most recently, she was instrumental in the passage of Act # 2020-39, which extended the deadline for state parties to certify candidates to our office for the November 3, 2020 General Election. This change was made to provide the Republican National Convention with adequate time to certify the names of the President and Vice President, as they were previously set to certify candidates after the state’s deadline.

Previously working for more than 23 years in hospital management in urban, suburban, and rural hospitals around her district, April brings a vast knowledge and unique history to her new role.

Understanding firsthand the challenges many on the front lines are currently experiencing, April Weaver will prove to be an outstanding addition to the Trump Administration and to Secretary Alex Azar’s team.

We applaud President Trump for his wise selection of this upstanding Alabamian who will undoubtedly serve our country with honor, integrity, and energy.
