Governor Kay Ivey Calls for Special Election for House District 73


Thursday, December 31, 2020 – MONTGOMERY – Following the resignation of Representative Matt Fridy (R-Montevallo), Governor Kay Ivey has called for a Special Election in House District 73, which includes parts of Shelby County.

The Special Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, March 30, 2021.

Interested candidates will have until Tuesday, January 26 to qualify with a major political party and declare their candidacy. Independent candidates and minor parties must submit the appropriate number of petition signatures to the Office of the Secretary of State no later than Tuesday, March 30.

If necessary, a Special Primary Runoff Election will be held on Tuesday, April 27.

The Special General Election will be held on Tuesday, July 13.

For the Special Primary Election, the deadline to register to vote is Monday, March 15. Eligible Alabamians can register to vote online at, on the mobile app “Vote for Alabama” or by visiting their local Board of Registrars office.

At the request of Secretary of State John H. Merrill, the elections to fill the House District 73 seat will coincide with the election dates of the Senate District 14 race, which includes parts of Shelby County, to accommodate the citizens of this area.
